Partly Due to the down Turn Many Ski Operators Will Be Slashing Their Amount of Catered Ski Chalets

Because of the global recession snowboarding occupancies decreased last season.

Even with cracking pre season reservations along with superb snow fall.

This fall in holidaymakers follows on from 6 seasons of development in the snowboarding industry, and the numbers decreased from 1.2 million in 2008/9 to less than a million last season.

Perhaps due to snowboarders giving the season a miss, and additional skiers who’d ordinarily have two ski trips, merely had one.

A fall of 15% was felt by the independent travel sector with several low cost airlines reducing the no. of routes to some destinations.

Moreover tour operators witnessed their numbers reducing by about the same amount.

However, the leading companies market share stayed at 73% and a France ski holiday retained its position as the favourite skiing destination with around 37% of skiing holidays.

Due to this several large ski operators reduced the no. of chalets they operate this year.

The catered chalet markets in particular are going to see a reduction in numbers in light of the fact that a catered ski chalet costs more in terms of chalet chefs and lease if it is not sold.

It remains unlikely we shall witness the last minute special offers which were on the market this year.

Although prices are expected to go up, prices probably won’t rise much.

Spice in Our Life

When Danny said that we need some spice in our life, I did not really understand what he meant. We had a happy family with three lovely kids, a dog, and a decent house with no pending mortgages; what else do you need from life? Ahh! What he meant was we needed some time together, away from the daily grind of life. And his idea for spicing up our life was a week-long trip to Grenada.

I did not know that the island of Grenada is famous for its spices. It was only when we reached there and were chauffeured to our hotel by the friendly and talkative driver did he tell me this fact about the place. Of course, I could smell the fragrant spices wherever I went, the air here is heavy with its aroma. Danny and I spent most of our days visiting the numerous beaches on the island. I would happily lie on a beach chair and soak up the sun while catching up on some reading whereas Danny would go snorkeling or even diving if he got to know about some good dive sites.

We went shopping at one of the numerous bazaars located on the island and were surprised to find that spices here were really cheap, which made me buy several sachets of all the different types of spices I could lay my hands on. Although I didn’t know what to do with it all and Danny kept grumbling about the amount I was purchasing, I still went ahead and bought them. He definitely was quite upset and refused to talk to me for more than an hour after that!

Finally, it was only when I gifted him a leather keychain-pen-drive that he was mollified. Hey isn’t this getting spice back in our life?

These days it is no longer the case that there were just a few taxi operators to pick.

At present the vacationer has a crop of choices, with nearly all transfer companies operating a fleet of modern buses.

Moreover if one is vacationing in Chamonix then a taxi ride can last just an hour, and only cost 25 Euros.

The speed of the transfer, and the cheaper prices of Geneva transfers, has entailed that short skiing breaks have become ever more popular as snowboarders opt to take less time off work, however still want to savor their skiing trips.

The popularity of ski weekends is set to continue as avid snowboarders are keen to have a ski vacation, but do not want to have a whole week out of the office owing to the current economic downturn.

The other benefit of the lower transfer prices is that the costs of skiing trips keeps on falling.

Ski rental is surely more reasonable than it used to be in the past, especially if one takes the chance to book online prior to leaving for your skiing holiday.

And although the relative weakness of the pound sterling versus the euro means that stuff is more expensive in the town, if you are enjoying a catered chalet then nearly all of your break is already paid for in pounds sterling ahead of your arrival.
