Forgoing Intimidation

There’s always more to learn about poker. Even the greatest players in the world are learning more about the game every day, in every hand. With poker, it’s not a question of how much you know, but how well you put your experience to use in each situation. And no matter how well you play, sometimes it’s just not going to work out in your favor. That is the nature of the game.

For this reason, when sitting down at the table as a beginner, or even later on in your career, there should never be any reason to feel intimidated or outmatched. No matter who you are playing against, we are all students, and the game is a fickle beast.

I remember my earliest excursions into big cash games both live and online poker, and how I felt like each hand was a test that could make me or break me. When older, more experienced players made their moves, I often felt like I was up against the bricks. But in the end, you realize that each hand is a new event, and the more you can be open to the idea that we are all players, the quicker you will feel confident enough to move into your A game all the time at the casino.

Cautions against Checking in the Dark

Though the popular poker move of ‘checking in the dark’ can be tempting or popular, especially with middling but prospective poker hands like small pairs and connectors, there are certain considerations that can often make it as much of a potential stumbling block as a potential bonus. Players check in the dark most often when they know they are out of the position and therefore don’t want to give their opponent information on their post-flop holdings, thus taking the onus of action of them.

But what about when the poker flop comes in a way that both helps your hand, and also requires that you protect against a draw? For instance, you have pocket 66 and the flop comes 2 4 5? If you simply check in the dark before the flop, allowing your opponent with over cards to simply check behind you and get a free card to catch up, you are essentially forgoing the option to defend your hand. Or if you flop a set, and your opponent flops a flush or straight draw, then checks trying to complete, you are putting yourself in a position to lose a big pot rather than sneak away when it doesn’t come your way.

By forgoing the opportunity to be an aggressor, you are giving away a certain reign of power, especially against certain types of opponents.

Being Open and Accepting

We all want the world to be the way that we want it, and sometimes we can get very specific about how we want it. We really should be more open and accepting of the world and be appreciative of what we all have. When things are not right and are done that will not make our planet a better place, then we should do what we think is right. As far as other daily things in our own space, that can be a whole different subject. No one wants to be too bossy and overbearing because it can drive people away, it is the people who are open and accepting that can end up having a lot of very positive and upbeat people around them. We are each very different in our own ways and the more that we can appreciate the differences and look at the good in the differences then the better that we will all get along.

It is so much fun to go over to one of my friends house because she let’s me be me, when I am in that house I know that she does not care how I act or what I say because she let’s me be myself. She is a very open and accepting person who I will do anything for because she does this for me, what a wonderful person. I also do have another friend who is a bit picky about the way that I act and what I say, so I tend not to go over to her house as much.

Professional Sports His Opinion about Poker’s Status as a Game of Skill

Ah, the oft debated but never truly settled conundrumis poker a game of skill, or of luck?

The debate has been ongoing for a long time, with strong support on both sides of the aisle, but today we look at one man’s opinion on it: Joe Hachem.

Who is Joe Hachem? Excuse the overused political rhetoric, and allow me to actually answer the question. Hachem works as an ambassador for the Crown casino in Austrailia and is marketing agent for the popular Poker Stars.

But that’s not what Hachem is here to talk about. No, today he’s trying to sell something else. He’s trying to sell the idea that poker is a sport just like boxing or football is a sport.

And he thinks it also has a viable place in the olympics. Now opponents would say that poker doesn’t really have all that much to do with athleticisim, but here Hachem would disagree.

When playing, Hachem recalls having to play 14 hours a day for seven days. He went through over 5000 people to come out on top. And here’s the point: such an act requires “exceptional endurance, stamina, competitiveness, and concentration, as well as strategy and an intense sense of psychology.”

Add all that together and you get a generally accepted definition of a sport as is applied to those activities we usually think of as sports.

Oh, and let’s not forget that two courts have ruled that poker is a game of skill, not a game of luck.

And perhaps that’s why poker has created such an uproar and has been steadily gaining in popularity since it’s inception to the wider spotlight of television and the internet.

But most importantly, Hachem’s comments and people who think in that same vein are the progressive idealists the poker community needs in order to heighten it’s acceptance among the nations and territories that still see it as kind of taboo subject.

Maybe, just maybe, with a little luck, we can get the ball moving and get the luck out of poker, and the title “skill” in.

Halloween Costume Ideas for a Trick-Or-Treat Date with Your Dog

Coming up withcreative costumes ideascan be challenging but when you team up with that special pooch in your life, the possibilities are endless! Here are five great ideas for “couples” costumes for a date with your dog.

1. Deadliest Catch
The hit Discovery Network series depicts the real-life dramas of life on the rugged seas. Your dog is the fisherman and you’re the catch! Dress your dog in a fisherman’s jacket and hat (yellow rainwear for dogs can work for this). Dress yourself up as a crab, lobster, crawfish… anything a fisherman might be out to catch. You’ll be sure to catch the attention of fellow trick-or-treaters.
2. Posh & Becks
Everyone knows the world-famous couple, Victoria Beckham and David Beckham. The Posh look can be achieved on a dog with a simple pair of sunglasses. Don a soccer jersey yourself to capture the look of Becks. Don’t forget a soccer ball!
3. Star Wars
Dress your dog as Yoda (you can get a dog costume from a number of places) and choose any Star Wars character for yourself. The Yoda Dog costume is sure to be a hit!
4. Joker and Batman
The success of the most recent Batman movie is a sure sign that Batman costumes will be very popular this year. You can star as Batman while your dog plays the Joker.
5. Hot Dog and Ketchup (or Mustard)
Your dog is the hot dog (obviously) and you’re the condiment. Believe it or not, hot dog costumes for dogs and ketchup and mustard bottle costumes (for humans) are pretty easy to come by. Check your local costume store or online.

Poker: It’s in the Chips

While online poker lives or dies by the microchip, poker itself would never have progressed to where it is today without the invention of the good old poker chip. Back in the 1800’s, poker tables in the U.S. were getting pretty crowded. Players who had spent all day mining for gold, wagered with gold nuggets (or gold dust if they had a poor hand). Of course, no two nuggets were the same size or value, they made no pleasant noise when hit together, and stacking was out of the question. Also, if you were the big winner and had to haul off a large bag of rocks at the end of the night after countless whiskeys, you might not make it home to weigh your loot. Thus, the poker chip was born out of necessity. The early ones were plain discs usually made of clay or wood or even bone. The problem with those, however, was that just about anyone could make such a disc and then sneak them into their own pot, a cheat that was known as “ringing in.” To counteract that, chip makers began putting unique designs on their chips, a tradition still upheld today, even on the virtual chips in an online game.
