Book Proposals 101.: What Publishers Want

Lots of writers like to talk about writing books. You hear very few talking about writing book proposals. Maybe that’s why it’s easy to forget that a strong book proposal is the first step to getting a great deal for your non-fiction book. It’s where you make the big pitch and tell the editor everything that’s going to make him or her want to buy.

A book proposal is also a great time saver for you because you’ll find in the course of researching your book proposal whether or not your idea is viable, or whether your category is already crowded with similar books. Here are the parts that make up a book proposal, and a few tips on how to make it really stand out to a potential publisher.

Title Page
This is the first page of the book proposal. Your title should be centered and printed about two-thirds of the way down the page. In the bottom left hand corner you’ll type in your name, address, phone number, email address and the name and contact information for your agent.

Overview
You’ll want to have two to three pages explaining the overall premise of your book. You’ll also want to include a Table of Contents that shows what points will be covered in each chapter.

Bio/Credentials
This isn’t just your usual resume stuff, this is a big opportunity to sell yourself as THE person to write the book. Write it in the third person starting with your education and credentials. You’ll want to point out any experience that specifically relates to the subject matter of the book. Have you written articles or previous books on the topic? Note those as well. List any public speaking that you have done and will do in the future, including television and radio interviews. Include a really nice photo. It doesn’t have to be a glamour shot, but you do want to look interesting and engaging. A 5″x7″ is fine.

Competition
The publisher will want to know if there are books similar to yours already out there. It will help them to see that there is a market for such books. At the same time, you’ll want to point out how your book will be different, or better, than what’s already out there. Do not trash someone else’s work. It’s bad form. It’s enough to say a competitor’s book left something out, or doesn’t cover a certain aspect. If you don’t know what competing books exist, you can look them up in Books in Print. Most libraries have it in the reference section.

Outline
This will be your chapter-by-chapter outline showing what you will cover, point-by-point, in each chapter. You can plan on allotting about half a page per chapter.

Sample Chapters
This is where you get to show that you really can write! You should submit at least three chapters of content. It doesn’t have to be the first three chapters, but if you haven’t written anything yet those may be the easiest to do. Then again, some writers like to start in the middle of a book! The main key here is to be good–no typos, no misspellings and no factual errors.

Marketing
The marketing section of your book proposal is so important that many publishers will often read it first. So make sure you spend the time to make this the best it can be. Lay out your whole marketing plan here. Explain who your target audience is, how big it is and why they will buy this book. How do you plan on reaching them? Are you buying your own advertising? If so, in what publications and what is their combined circulation? Will you be reaching out to book clubs, corporations or college classes where you book could be taught? How can you make your book stand out against the ones that are already out there? You want to make the case that there is a ready made audience out there and all the publisher has to do is reach out and grab them by signing you.

Promotion
Remember, a publisher wants to acquire you and your connections, so this is another important section of the proposal. How will you put yourself out there for your book? You’ll want to explain if you’ll be doing public speaking, or maybe you have a huge list you communicate with via newsletter every month. How many are on your list? If you plan to hire your own publicist, put that fact in as well. Do you have famous connections that will help you get great blurbs? Do you have a budget? If so, how much? Yes, they do want to know if you plan on spending some of your own money!

Publishing Details
Here you’ll detail the length you propose for the book (in words) and whether the book will have any illustrations or photos. You’ll also want to give an estimate for the time you’ll need to turn in the finished manuscript.

And that’s it. When your proposal is done you might want to hire an editor or a book consultant to go over it and give you some strong feedback. That way you’ll know you have it in the best shape possible and you can feel confident when you’re sending it out.

So, why should you remember the saying, “Give and you
shall receive”? Well, if you give value, you will receive the
benefits of a satisfied customer. You have to give value
before you can receive value.

Now, you’re probably wondering how you can provide substantial
value to your customers so that your information goes in one ear
and turns on a light bulb that says, “Eureka!… that is some
powerful stuff that I can use immediately!”

Well, if you are wondering about this very question, you’re in luck
because if you look below you will discover the five keys that you
will want to print out, stick on your wall, and use every time you
sit down to create an information product.

1.Connect with your customer and build rapport. Show
that you are human, also. You can do this by talking about a
failure in your life and how you turned it around, an obstacle that
you overcame, or a person that influenced your life and business.

The bottom line is you want to your customer to feel as though
you were in their very same position, and you can relate to their
situation. This immediately builds credibility because the
customer begins to see you as a friend, instead of just an
investment.

2.”That’s great, but What’s It Going To Do For Me?” As
the customer views your product, this is the MOST important
question they have… So, answer it! Be sure to point out how they
are going to very clearly benefit from the information you are giving
to them.

3.In the introduction of your product, always give your
best promise of what you expect to deliver to the client. Do you
expect to show the client how he can make an extra $1,509 a
month? Lose 23 pounds? Save 139,403,839 seconds a year?
If so, let the client know what kind of value he is about to receive.

4. “Alright, saving 139,403,839 seconds a year sounds
great, but this sounds too difficult.” The next question the
customer wonders after finding out what your information can do
for him is if they can do it… So, let him or her know “Yes, You
Can and here’s why…!”

5.Let the customer know possible potential return on
investment if they utilize the information you are providing. In
other words, tell the customer the end result as to what your
information can do for him. Will the customer master weaving,
writing, or what ever your product is showing him what to do?

Publishing My Magazine: A Look Behind The Scenes…….

I thought it might be interesting to give you some idea of what it is like publishing this magazine. My plan in life was to publish a book or two, but to make a long story short…it didn’t happen. Then came a chance to host TV programs on holistic stuff…which I did….and I am still involved with that project. One day..after a shake-up on the TV show project, my spirit guides suggested that I start an online magazine. I said, What? They kept at this… untill in a few days I sat at the computer trying to start the magazine.

Aside from the fact that I am still new to computers, I found out the hard way that writing and publishing are two different things. If I wrote a book, it would take a total focus on the book untill it was published. But with publishing, especially a magazine….the focus will continue…non stop!

So as soon as I come home from my full time job…I head for the computer! First I check for any e-mails. Then go into the magazine to see if I can find any more [ typos ]. Then I check the magazine’s message board, and the newsletter subscriptions. Then I search the internet to see where I can promote the publication…so people can actually find it. Then I contact other related sites to see if they will agree to link to the magazine…again so others can find it. Then I go to special sites where I can pull articles from…..and if I’m lucky.. publish them in the magazine. Then I think about articles that I can write…or listen to my guides about material that they want published. Then I search for other sites that will publish my articles…so that more people can hear about the magazine. Then I go to magazine and ezine directories and try to get the magazine listed there. Some of the time I work on the newsletter that is sent out from the magazine.

My wife, Sandy and I live in a four room apartment, one room is an office. The magazine is published from this space. Since I’m home anyway…I eat a quick dinner and get back to the computer and magazine stuff. After taking a shower, at some point you can find me sitting at the computer again…in my underwear…working on some aspect of the magazine.

Unlike a book….which would finally get published, the magazine must always be in publication and updated. I must be nuts…..but I do it anyway!

Make ‘em READ Your Cover Letter Using This Killer Secret!

Got your attention? Great. That was my intention. Who wouldn’t want to read on when the title promises a ‘killer secret.’

If I hadn’t nabbed you in the first three seconds, however, I’d have lost you. People read and decide just like that. A job interviewer does the same thing. Read and toss. Read and toss. But that doesn’t have to happen to your cover letter. You can grab and keep his or her attention with a smashing title or headline. This technique is one of the best-kept secrets in the career industry. Most job-hunters focus on their credentials, instead of focusing on the hiring manager they want to meet in person. Make him or her read your complete cover letter from start to finish without blinking.

How does this little secret separate your cover letter from all the others? Great question! The answer? Most people don’t know about it, so they can’t use it. But now you know, so by putting a powerful headline at the top of your cover letter, it will rise to the top of the pile on the interviewer’s desk. In fact, he or she may stop right there, and ignore the other letters. It can lead to the appointment you’re after and the job you want.

What happens if you skip it? Exercise the ‘muscle’ of a strong headline at the beginning of your next job-search cover letter and watch your calendar fill up with interviews for the job that is just right for you.

Is The Theme Running Throughout The Story?

Creative Writing Tips -

It’s no use coming up with a theme and not using it. Short stories are about a character or characters and about one situation or happening in those characters’ lives.

By concentrating on that one thing, our stories are focused. You will need to focus to maintain a level of intensity and sticking to the theme enables us to do that.

Let me give you an example…

Scenario One

Let’s say your story is about a young man (main character) who is being harassed (one situation) by the school bully (secondary character.) Let’s place the setting in grade school.

Now if we focus on that single happening and in our story say….

  • What started the bullying
  • What the main character felt, confronted with this problem
  • What the main character did to overcome this problem
  • If the main character won or lost against the bully…

Then we’ll be focusing only on that incident which is what our story is about.

Scenario Two

Now if we took that situation further and in our story said that this character grew up and was bullied in high school and then later by a colleague…

That will be listing three incidences, which will weaken our story because we are not focusing.

Remember a short story is short.

We don’t have too much leeway to develop too many things so we have to be selective with what we choose to concentrate on. Short stories work best when they span over a short period of time.

Like in scenario one, this incident might span over a couple of days or a week, where in the second scenario, it spans over a number of years. The shorter the time span the more intense the story.

Your theme should begin at the beginning, run through the middle and conclude in the end. So let’s put a theme to the first scenario…

‘Strength Comes From Within And In The End Prevails.’

How can I have this theme running throughout my story?

Initially I will portray my main character as a weak individual. But I will excuse his weakness, by saying perhaps that…

“He comes from a closely knit, loving family and initially doesn’t know how to deal with such a conflict.”

As my story progresses, I will gradually show his inner strength and I will do this through incidences, which will show his maturity, like…

• He helps out by caring for his younger siblings and contributes with the housework.

And

• I can show him cutting the neighbours’ lawns or delivering newspapers before school to show that he contributes economically too.

If I do this, my ending (when he wins against the bully) will be believable because I have developed his inner strength. My theme would have run its course.
